Funnel Ants in Brisbane Suburbs
If your lawn in Brisbane is suddenly covered in little volcano-shaped piles of sandy soil, you’ve probably got funnel ants. They’re pretty common across South East Queensland, especially once the weather warms up and after a bit of rain. You’ll see them in places like Kedron, Chermside, Aspley, Carindale, Logan, and plenty of other suburbs.
The name comes from the shape of the nest entrance. Each one has a small funnel or cone of dirt that the ants keep tidy. The mounds themselves aren’t usually very big — often just a few centimetres high — but you can end up with dozens or even a couple of hundred of them scattered over a single lawn. They’re most active when the soil is soft, so after rain is when they really get going.
Brisbane’s climate suits them. Warm weather, regular rain, and the kind of soil you find in a lot of local yards give them everything they need. Lawns that get watered a fair bit, or that have thin patches of grass, tend to attract them more. Properties near parks, bushland edges, or with established gardens often see more activity because the ants can wander in from next door or further afield.
They’re not usually aggressive toward people, but they make a mess of the lawn. All that digging and soil moving thins the grass out, leaves bare spots, and makes the surface uneven. If there’s a lot of them, the lawn can start looking stressed and patchy, particularly if they’re competing with the grass for moisture near the surface. The ground can also become unstable making it a safety issue.
The easiest way to spot them is the mounds themselves. They’re often more obvious in the morning or straight after rain. You might also see ants coming and going from the funnels on warmer days. Unlike some other ants that build one big obvious nest, funnel ants tend to spread out across the whole lawn. The can even infest an entire street or suburb.
A lot of people try to deal with them themselves — flooding the mounds, pouring boiling water down them, or using whatever ant granules they can grab from the hardware store. Those things can knock a few nests down for a while, but they rarely clear the problem properly. Funnel ants usually have multiple nests, so treating only the ones you can see often just shifts the activity somewhere else or lets it build back up within a few weeks.
Shop-bought products also struggle to get deep enough into the nest or leave much residual effect. And if you’ve got kids or pets using the yard, overdoing the insecticides isn’t ideal anyway.
When we treat funnel ants we start by walking the lawn and seeing how many active mounds there are and how spread out they are. Then we target the active nests and the surrounding activity. The idea is to deal with what’s there now and reduce the chance of it flaring up again straight away.
For a typical residential lawn, treatment starts from $550. The final price depends on the size of the area and how many mounds are active. We always give you the quote before we start so you know exactly what you’re paying. We also talk through pet-safe options and let you know when it’s fine to use the lawn again afterward.
Because we’re based in Kedron and work across Brisbane and the surrounding suburbs all the time, we see this regularly. Same-week appointments are usually available, and often same-day or next-day depending on the schedule.
There are a few things that can make the lawn less appealing to them long-term. Don’t over-water — constantly damp soil is easier for them to dig in. Clearing excess thatch and not leaving piles of leaves sitting against the soil helps too. After heavy rain it’s worth having a quick look and dealing with new mounds early before they multiply.
If you’re seeing a fair few mounds, the grass is looking patchy, or the DIY stuff hasn’t lasted, it’s usually worth getting someone to have a proper look. A targeted treatment tends to be more effective than repeatedly buying products that only give temporary relief.
