Rats and mice are mammals and can easily transmit disease to humans. The habits of rats and mice can be unhygienic and their lifestyle can see them inhabiting sewers, rubbish tips etc.
Rats hide from every other life form larger than itself. Rats and mice travel about hidden under cover. Pipes, sewers, cracks, crevices, burrows, roof voids. wall voids, pantries, cupboards, sub floors, attics, barns, sheds, long grass, creeks, river banks, rubbish, stored timber and furniture and many out of the way areas.

Rats and mice are scavengers and eat almost anything. Some favourite foods are in your pantry. Dry foods like grains, floor, cake mixes, breads, oats, seeds, pet food and any food humans like rats and mice also like. Compost heaps are another great source of food, rats like and will eat any fruit or vegetable.
Laundries can be a good source of food as many pet owners store dog or cat biscuits there. The pets are often feed outside the laundry or back door. Rats and mice take advantage of these situations and steal what they can.
Rodents travel through sewers. Rodents can swim under water and climb vertical walls. Rats have been known to try and exit the sewer through the toilet bowl. Some exit from the bowl, some re-enter the sewer and some become trapped.
